Week 6: The Eagles Covered a Tight End. Just Not That One.
The Crime: Philadelphia publicly identifies Carolina’s tight ends as playmakers, prepares for Darren Waller, and then permits Tommy Tremble to stand completely unattended three yards from the end zone.
Down and Distance: Fourth-and-goal from the Philadelphia 3. 8:08 remaining in the second quarter.
Defensive Strategy: Account for Darren Waller so thoroughly that Tommy Tremble ceases to exist.
Result: Bryce Young finds Tremble wide open, and Tremble walks into the left side of the end zone for his first touchdown of the season.
Official Ruling: Philadelphia failed an open-book exam using a study guide it wrote itself.
Degree of Difficulty: Three yards. No contested catch. No extraordinary athletic maneuver. No Philadelphia Eagle within meaningful objection distance.
Carm’s Coaching Note:
When your own game preview says, “The tight ends are playmakers,” please understand that tight ends is plural. The “s” is not decorative. It indicates that Carolina may possess more than one large eligible receiver, and occasionally the correct defensive strategy is to cover both of them.
Additional Charge | Repeat Negligence:
Apparently one completely uncovered Tommy Tremble touchdown was insufficient evidence that Tommy Tremble was participating in the football game.
With 6:39 remaining, Carolina faced first-and-10 from the Philadelphia 19. Tremble (the same tight end who had already scored while unattended) ran directly into the middle of the end zone. Philadelphia’s entire defense responded by behaving as though he had left the stadium.
Bryce Young found him completely uncovered for the 19-yard touchdown and the effective killshot.
Official Ruling: The first offense could have been dismissed as an isolated coverage failure. The second establishes departmental policy.
Carm’s Supplemental Coaching Note:
Once the same tight end has scored completely uncovered, continued surveillance is generally recommended. His eligibility does not expire after the first touchdown, nor does he become less visible by catching another pass on the same drive.
Witten Index: 10/10
Two touchdowns. Same tight end. Same complete absence of coverage. Philadelphia received both the preseason reading assignment and an in-game demonstration. Further instruction does not appear productive.
